For the past seven years, many of our readers have been following the story of VeganLand, Gentle World’s agricultural initiative in Hawaii.
While we had initially hoped that VeganLand would be a long-term project, we had to reevaluate that vision along the way, due to various logistical considerations, along with changes in circumstance, and things we learned about the land during our time as its custodians. In 2024, it ultimately became clear that the stars were not aligning toward that outcome.
The ownership of the parcel has now passed to a farming family managing a major orchard project. So while the acreage won’t be VeganLand any longer, it will remain in plant foods production, helping to provide wholesome nutrition for the Hawaiian Islands. The new owners have already begun planting out hundreds of avocado trees.
During its years in service toward Gentle World’s mission, VeganLand’s 34 acres provided sanctuary and nourishment to many rescued animals, all of whom now remain in the care of the other organizations we partnered with.
No doubt the horses, cows, and pigs who spent time there will occasionally dream of their days grazing on VeganLand’s verdant meadows, but thankfully there was no need to scramble to find homes for the rescues, knowing that they will stay healthy and well cared for by their original custodians.
We remain grateful for the support and encouragement of our readers and subscribers, as well as our partner organizations that helped to bring additional meaning and significance to the initiative. Our veganic growing and demonstration efforts will continue at our other locations, and we are as committed as ever to our overall mission of building a more peaceful world through vegan education.
