“This is one of my favorite cookbooks. In fact, I’m partial to almost anything produced by the Gentle World people ever since I purchased this book of theirs. I’ve pulled it off my bookshelf many, many times when I was craving ‘something’ and I’ve never been disappointed.”
“I have many cookbooks but this is one of my favorites. It has great recipes, beautiful photographs and lots of quotable quotes.”
“Easy to follow yet delicious results for even a beginner. I love the broad selection and quick easy directions that can vary according to taste.”
The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals
The Cookbook That Redefined Vegan Cooking
Compiled in 1981, long before most of the world knew what the word ‘vegan’ even meant, let alone that vegan food can be even more delicious than standard fare, The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals is a true vegan classic.
Now in its eighth edition, and still in the original typeset!
“I have had this since it first came out and it is STILL the best vegan cookbook according to my family… My mother ‘loved’ animals always but thought I would die when I became a vegan 43 years ago, as did my doctor. When I got to cook with Gentle World for an event and bought her this cookbook, she became vegan.”
“This is one of the best vegan cookbooks. This is a great cookbook for anyone looking for down-to-earth useful recipes. The recipes are easy and practical.”
“This has to be the most beautiful cookbook I have ever seen! It is full of really cool drawings of cows, sheep, dogs, and flowers. I also really enjoyed the quotes. The cookbook is completely vegan and full of easy to make recipes.”
“I highly recommend this book to other vegans and also to non-vegans who are interested in knowing why we do not eat or use animals or any products derived from them. And for those who would like that infamous question answered, “Then what do you eat?” Reading this book provided a very spiritual experience for me, with the quotes, poems and essays included throughout the book touching my heart and soul deeply.”
“The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals was the very first cookbook I purchased when I became vegetarian in 1989, and it started me on a journey of healthful, compassionate eating and living. Thank you!”
“My copy of the cookbook is worn and tattered and taped together. Before my daughter-in-law married my son, this is the book I lent to her. Now my granddaughter and grandson use it.”
“To inspect the pages of my cookbook, you will find well-worn, recipe-stained, note-taking pages filled with years of my vegetarian cooking education. I have purchased other vegetarian cookbooks since then, but yours is the cookbook that I will never get rid of. So thank you, such a great book and wonderfully yummy recipes!”
“Over the years, I have bought many – yes, hundreds – of copies of The Cookbook for People who Love Animals for distribution to local groups.”
“Love Incredibly Delicious, but still Gentle World’s classic Cookbook for People Who Love Animals is at the top of my favorites list :)”
“I have enjoyed my 1983 edition of The Cookbook… for all these years. It is unique and refreshing; a gift to all who read it.”
Gentle World Publishing
Our Vegan Publishing in 1981
Long before most people knew what the word vegan meant, Gentle World created the first full-length vegan cookbook in the United States: The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals. In the 40 years since, this groundbreaking publication has sold nearly 100,000 copies, and continues to sell in its eighth edition. Created on a typewriter and still in the original typeset, The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals is a true vegan classic.
While they are now out of print, we are proud to count as part of our history the publishing of two pioneering vegan nutrition books by Michael A. Klaper M.D: Vegan Nutrition, Pure and Simple and Pregnancy, Children and the Vegan Diet. These two lovingly-written books provided much-needed nutritional assurance to thousands of readers, back when the benefits of a plant based diet were little-known.
In 2000, we produced Incredibly Delicious: Recipes for a New Paradigm. This 500-recipe vegan guide contains over 40 color photos, as well as inspirational and thought-provoking quotes, and an extensive resource section.
In 2010, we began the development of our online outreach program, which has provided over 40,000 hours of vegan education to the growing number of people interested in transitioning to a gentler, more sustainable way of eating and living.
In 2020, we directed our publishing efforts toward the creation of an online course and a series of eBooks, beginning with our Vegan FAQ, which draws on knowledge and insight gained from multiple decades of providing vegan education.

How You Can Help
What you can do to help us awaken the vegan in everyone:
Become vegan
If you’re not yet vegan, this is the most significant thing you can do. In today’s world, billions upon billions of nonhuman animals are exploited to serve human purposes, just like human slaves. Their owners are legally entitled to subject them to unimaginable cruelty in the name of profit, convenience, and fulfilling the desires of consumers. Every non-vegan choice contributes to this atrocity. The rising tide of vegans, on the other hand, is the hope these enslaved individuals have for emancipation from this brutal existence.
Help others to become vegan
Moral paradigm shifts do not cause themselves. They are caused by small groups of people within society who persistently educate others why change is necessary. By becoming an advocate for veganism, you can join a growing, positive, and peaceful movement to foster respect for the natural world, protect and restore public health, and most important, to end the social acceptability of violence and injustice inflicted on our fellow animals.
