The Spirit of Kisses

When Kisses first set foot in Shangri-La, she walked right into the arms of Butterflies, to whom she was to become one of the most important beings in the world. But even then, she could never have known that she had hit the jackpot; that she was, in fact, one of the most fortunate dogs […] Read more

People Like You

The Southern Hemisphere summer is over. It’s the time of year when Gentle World’s volunteers return from Shangri-La, our New Zealand location, back to Hawaii. It’s hard to believe that only one week ago, I was admiring the natural beauty in New Zealand, but I knew then that in a matter of days, I would be […] Read more

~ Tiziana Picasso I was a vegetarian for two years when I arrived in Shangri-La. But I never really thought about veganism. I didn’t want to give up my cheese (I’m French, you understand?) Creating Magic…

Veganism is not new to me, but my week here has been good for re-evaluating myself. I believe that this violence-free lifestyle results a gentler humankind, which would actually precipitate World Peace if adopted widely.

In our New Zealand location, our vegan educational center called Shangri-La is a model of vegan cooperative living. The food is grown veganically (marrying the principles of organic growing with the ethics of veganism), and the land is off-the-grid; powered by solar and hydro-electric.

Life in a Vegan Community post image

~ Silvi Burden When I first came to Shangri La, to stay for a week with the people of Gentle World, I had no idea what to expect. I was really nervous about staying with people I had only emailed with beforehand. And in addition: vegans. I had been a vegetarian myself for only two […] Read more

You Can’t Return to Ignorance post image

Dear Gentle World,

At this time one year ago, Lilly and I were sitting in Auckland anxiously awaiting our visit to Gentle World, not knowing what to expect. Veganism was a far-off thing that, quite frankly, didn’t seem like a realistic thing to do. Now, one year later, we are still Vegan-American and proudly so. It has changed the course of our lives dramatically.
